Hey,

Sold my E46 318 CI last summer and am thinking to get back into another BMW.

Thought about E46 330 Ci but over the last few weeks have been thinking about an X5. I think you get a lot more for your money etc.

Budget is between the £20-25K mark. Black or Silver would be ideal. Also has to be the X5 3.0d.

I know very little about X5's so any comments would be much helpful.

Wouldn't mind waiting for a while until I find the one that I want. (not sure at the moment)

Saw this one on pistonheads. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/347166.htm

Is this fairly priced? Best spec?

Thanks in advance.

What year is it? Advert doesn't say.

Those Kahn wheels are chavvy IMO.

Has to be the facelift version with better XDrive and engine. Sport is also well specced. Plenty of used ones about. Take your time and find what you want. Many are still way overpriced though so be wary

Thanks for your responses guys. I am going to take my time. Going on what I read it has to be the 3.0D sport.

Hulking, ugly great lump. The 330ci on the other hand is a thing of beauty.

Agree with you. Would take the 330ci any day but the X5 is more practical for the family etc.

GReat cars, check thre following though (most common in my experience):
1. Split inlet manifold - check for oily gas exiting on the seam weld joining the top and bottom half. Seems to be weakest around the corners. Also loss of power and 'whistling' will indicate this.

2. Axle carrier bushes - one of the most common faults, be prepared to replace all 4, not just the worn ones, budget about 400 quid. You can tell if they are gone by a very distinctive clunk on pull away.

3. Driveshaft / CV joints - these are integral and CV joint is not available from BMW separately from the driveshaft - budget 400 each.

4. Tyres - Expensive as you will learn with the X5, use this as a bargaining tool as applicable.

5. Auto box on early diesels. Usually fails with no warning, enough second hand units now, so not the end of the world.

Otherwise, great car, dont let the above put you off!

I agree but then i would Wink

Mate of mine went from an e39 to an X5 but regretted it till he got shot of it about 6 months later. Can't remember what he didn't like about it, but he went back to a 5 series.

I've always liked the look of the X5 but not had any experience of one myself, but like you said there seems to be a lot to choose from. Def worth holding out till the spec you want turns up.

Happy hunting!
