Or 'rattling'/clanking.

That's why I suggested a shaft swap, Roofer.

If the diff isn't whining, would you expect any load related diff 'rattles'? (I wouldn't.)

All you need is the big socket (32mm?) to undo the nut, Neil. It'll tap through the hub easily. Cool

No, not if the oil level is ok.

It doesn't.

Not that I've been able to tell.

Rattle as opposed to 'knock'?

Erm, could be called a knock I suppose. Confused

Not sure I get you. When I say wheel speed related I mean that it's got nothing to do with engine speed or gear selected. I suspect you mean something more involved.

No, can do that tomorrow evening.

No, but if you've got a half shaft then maybe swapping that in to see if that eliminates it would be a good move over the Easter weekend?

Is the regualarity as if something was catching a wheel every revolution, or does it sound 'faster'? Question

Your propshaft is spinning 3.25 times for every turn of your rear wheels. Often propshaft/pinion (diff input) noises are discernible from output/shaft/wheel noises.

I don't, but I know a man just down the road from you in Camberley who might. I've sent him a PM to see if he has one, and if he's prepared to let you borrow it Smile

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I was about to post that as a question Smile

Same deal on the E36 ? Remove nut, tap through with a lump of wood ?

Steve.

Ah right, I get you now. Wheel speed, not prop shaft speed. Smile

You want a drift or a punch, Steve.

Deffo wheel speed related, Neil?

I can't be 100% Simon as I hadn't given it any thought while in the car. The more I think about it, the more I think it may be three times faster than wheel speed.

Not much use this morning, am I? Embarassed Razz

The diff isn't moving on the over run is it Neil? (Allowing the prop to touch something.)

I don't think so. The other piece of information that leads me to suspect that it's a problem that's internal to the diff, a joint or bearing is that it's usually much quieter when the car is cold, and reaches its full volume after about 5 minutes. Confused

I am about this evening if you need any help with the wagon.

Can provide one of my big sticky out ears to help identify the offending component!

Ah thanks Ben, but I was otherwise engaged tonight. I'm not sure there's much we can do now anyway without some more bits. Robin has ordered some diff oil, and if/or Ian's chum in Camberley turns up this half shaft I'll crack on with it on Tuesday / Wednesday evening if possible. Failing that it'll be Easter weekend.

Neil,

Simon got back to me, and he has 2 or 3 spare shafts, and you are welcome to borrow one Smile

I'll ring him today to see how is the best way for you to tie up with him and collect the shaft.

Cheers,

Ian.

That'd be excellent Ian. I can probably get over to Camberley at about 7.30 tonight, or if Bennyboy's free, he may be able to get over there sooner if it helps.

Thanks. Smile

Yep, available if required!

I work in Farnborough (next door to Camberley) so not a problem.

Would you be able to get there for about 5pm ?

He finishes work at 4.30pm, and can be home by about 5pm. He is however working on someones conservatory tonight, so will be going back out after 5pm until about 9pm.

I've just tried calling Neil to discuss, but got his answer phone.

Ian.
